Thousands of people marched through downtown Philadelphia and gathered for a rally at Independence Mall today. The marchers not only remembered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but also demanded an end to Philadelphia’s stop and frisk policy, a fifteen dollar an hour minimum wage, and fairly funded democratic public schools. The march proceeded under a heavy police presence. No arrests were reported.
Speakers pointed to the fact that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
was assassinated in Memphis while helping the sanitation workers there organize for a living wage. Philadelphians engaged in struggle to celebrate Dr. King. The deaths
of Michael Brown and Eric Garner at the hands of law enforcement officers were
cited as evidence that people need to organize to push for justice against police violence. Marchers articulated through placards, banners,
and chants that there is a definite link between police violence and economic
exploitation.
